Optical Communications: Innovations and Applications Abound

Optical communications has enjoyed tremendous impact over the past 50 years. Relatively soon after the concrete proposal of optical fiber communications was reported and the low-loss fiber was demonstrated, fiber-based communications dramatically impacted the way society transfers information. However, there are other key areas beyond fiber-based communications that were also envisioned ~50 years ago but are only recently emerging. Such emergence is due to enhanced capacity needs and critical innovations, including advances in photonic integrated circuits (PICs). This webinar will highlight various examples of the innovations and emerging applications of optical communications, including: 1. Free-space optical communications: As opposed to RF, optical links have high directionality and large bandwidth. There is great excitement in the recent emergence of deployed free-space optical links, be they through air or outer-space. Moreover, due to the extremely high losses of RF, even underwater links in the blue-green are gaining significant interest. Also to be discussed is capacity enhancement using multiplexing of multiple orthogonal beams. 2. Non-conventional wavelengths: Fiber systems are overwhelmingly in the near-IR, whereas free-space links can take advantage of a much wider frequency range, from THz to visible. Such systems may utilize: (a) native high-speed components, and/or (b) wavelength-band conversion of near-IR channels to other frequencies. 3. Optical signal processing (OSP): OSP has long held the promise of high-speed operation and the avoidance of inefficient optical-electrical-optical conversion. Although OSP deployment has been limited, advances in PICs, power efficiency and multi-wavelength operation may soon enable the emergence of OSP for high-performance functions.

IPv6-based 5G/6G, IoT, Cloud Computing and Blockchain

The new internet based on IPv6 The IPv6 Deployment worldwide is becoming a reality now with some countries achieving more than 60% user penetration with France (70%), Belgium (63%), USA (50%) and India (60%) at the top ranking ( and reaching double digits v6 coverage on Google IPv6 stats. May Autonomous Networks (ASN) reach more than 90% with v6 preferred or v6 capable: ( Over 2.5 Billion users are accessing Internet over IPv6 and probably not even knowing it. ( If this trend continues, we should achieve 90% by 2025 which would be the inflection point when the full roll-out of IPv6 becomes a strategic plumbing decision of the networks to move to IPv6-Only and start divorcing IPv4 from the Internet. The US Government has already set some dates to move to IPv6-Only by 2025. New topics are more on the lime light such as Cloud Computing, Internet of Things, 5G/6G, … However, these fields are taking IP networking for granted designing them on IPv4/NAT building non-scalable and non-end to end solutions. 5G Spectrum Sharing: A Network Economics View

The evolution of commercial wireless networks to 5G and beyond will continue to increase the demands for wireless spectrum. Traditionally, commercial wireless service providers have utilized spectrum that is exclusively licensed to them. Moving forward, these networks will increasingly operate in spectrum that is shared including utilizing unlicensed spectrum and the tiered sharing approach recently adopted for the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) adopted for sharing the 3.5 GHZ band with incumbent users. The success of these approaches is in turn tightly coupled to the economic impact they have on the competition between wireless service providers. In this talk we will discuss a framework for gaining insight into these impacts based on game theoretic models for competition with congestible resources. We will utilize this framework to illustrate potential impacts of different emerging sharing scenarios.

Integrated quantum photonic platform by femtosecond laser waveguide writing

The field of quantum photonics promises to revolutionize the way in which we process information, thanks to the peculiar and counterintuitive properties of quantum states of light. In this regard, the use of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) will enable the miniaturization of the experimental setup needed for the generation, manipulation, and detection of single photons, beneficial for achieving a stable and scalable operation. During this talk, the role of femtosecond laser waveguide writing in the field of quantum photonics will be discussed. This microfabrication platform, based on the nonlinear interaction between an ultrafast laser and a transparent substrate, provides unique advantages, such as the possibility of inscribing complex three-dimensional waveguiding structures with low losses and a polarization insensitive behavior. After a general introduction, some selected applications of fs laser written PICs will be reported, mainly in the field of quantum information processing and quantum artificial intelligence with photons.

Complex optical components based on geometric phase

Many areas in Photonics demand the design and construction of complex optical systems that require overcoming challenges in control, efficiency, and miniaturization, which are not possible to achieve with the usual diffractive and refractive elements. Recently, a promising type of optics has emerged that exploits the geometric phase (GP) shift also known as Pancharatnam–Berry phase to modify wavefronts or shaping beams by introducing spatially varying anisotropy. GP promises a new generation of electro-optical elements with arbitrary phase profiles that potentially can overcome those challenges and be incorporated into a wide variety of modern optical systems to have improvements in a wide range of applications.
