Optical Fiber Biosensors: From the Design to the Practical Realization

Hosted By: Optical Biosensors Technical Group

23 May 2022 10:00 - 11:00

Eastern Time (US & Canada) (UTC -05:00)

Optical fibers have been used for decades in the field of sensors for the detection of physical and biochemical parameters. In this webinar hosted by the Optical Biosensors Technical Group, Cosimo Trono will provide basic information on the optical properties of fibers and how these properties must be perturbed to consent the interaction of the guided light with the external world. Keeping in mind that the theory and the design are often unable to predict practical problems and setbacks, the webinar will focus on the possible practical (optical, optoelectronic, microfluidic, data-analysis, etc.) issues related to the development of an optical fiber biosensor. At the end of the webinar, Dr. Trono will address the most current research and developments of optical fiber biosensors.

Subject Matter Level:  Intermediate - Assumes basic knowledge of the topic

What You Will Learn:

  • Fundamentals of optical fibers and sensing
  • Optical fiber for biosensing
  • Development of an optical fiber-based biosensor

Who Should Attend:

  • Students, including senior undergraduates and graduate students
  • Researchers interested in optical fiber biosensor science
About the Presenter: Cosimo Trono, The Istituto di Fisica Applicata

Cosimo Trono graduated in Physics from the University of Florence in 1998 and obtained his PhD in “Non-Destructive controls” from the University of Florence in 2003. Trono joined the Optical Chemical and Biochemical sensors group at the Institute of Applied Physics “Nello Carrara” in 2006, and he is now Senior Researcher in the Institute of Applied Physics. His main interests concern optics, optical fibers, and sensor science. Trono’s research activity is devoted to the design and development of optical sensors and to the study of novel optical methods for sensing. Recently, he has become active in the field of optical sensors for chemical and biochemical parameters with applications to the biomedical field, and in the field of the microfluidics device development and their integration into detection optoelectronic devices.
