Optica Communications Manager

Optica is looking for a Optica Communications Manager .

The Optica Communications Manager supports and oversees two general areas:

  1. Optica Meetings Communications Support
  2. Optica Foundation and Special Projects Support

Primary Responsibilities

• Oversight of meetings-related communications (liaison to meetings team), team lead with OFC consultants

• Attends all internal planning meetings for committed conferences:  Photonics West, OFC, Leadership, FiO+LS; and Congresses: Laser Congress, High-Brightness, Imaging and Sensing, Nonlinear Optics, Design and Fabrication

• Primary writer of select meetings-related scripts; works with meeting chairs for approvals

• Primary writer of select meetings-related press releases; works with meeting chairs for approvals

• Manages logistics and planning for media activities at select Optica and Optica co-sponsored conferences (meeting room reservations, catering, AV requests)

• Lead on media relations outreach to promote the conference; connect with local media

• Attend selected  events to cover sessions and incorporate programming into the daily wrap, blogs, and social media

Secondary Responsibilities

• Communications and media relations for Optica Foundation; impact storyteller

• Special projects communications support (IDL, Symposiums, Impact Events)

Education and Experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, communications, or related field
  2. Five to Seven  years of media relations, public relations, and communications work experience
  3. Familiarity with science research and scientific publishing is preferred
  4. Experience with media monitoring services/reporter database search services. (Meltwater)
  5. Experience with social media content/analytics (Hootsuite, Google Analytics, Radian6)

Skills and Abilities

  1. Strong writing/editing/verbal communications/customer service skills required
  2. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and work independently
  3. Skilled in writing about economics, finance as well as for analytic skills
  4. Attention to detail is critical. Offers a high level of q/c skills
  5. Proficiency in Microsoft Office/Windows and online research
  6. Ability to handle fast-paced environment/experience coordinating vendors and consultants
  7. Travel: Some international and domestic travel for conferences is required
  8. Enjoys the excitement of scientific discovery and its application to help improve/solve global challenges
