Optica Names Marin Soljacic the 2023 Max Born Award Recipient

Optica (formerly OSA), Advancing Optics and Photonics Worldwide, is pleased to announce that Marin Soljacic, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, has been selected as the 2023 recipient of the Max Born Award. Soljacic is recognized for seminal contributions to the fields of plasmonics, electromagnetism, and topological photonics.

Soljacic received BsE degrees in physics and electrical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA and earned his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University, USA. He is currently a Professor of physics at MIT and is a founder of WiTricity, LuxLabs, as well as Lightelligence.

His main research interests are in artificial intelligence as well as electromagnetic phenomena, focusing on nanophotonics, non-linear optics, and wireless power transfer.

He is an international member of the Croatian Academy of Engineering. He has received additional honors including a MacArthur Fellowship “genius” grant, the Blavatnik National Award, and the Adolph Lomb Medal. He received the Croatian President’s top medal for Science, "The Order of the Croatian Daystar, with the image of Ruđer Bošković" and was awarded "The Order of the Croatian Interlace" medal. He was also a highly cited researcher according to Web of Science for 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Established in 1982, the Born Award recognizes outstanding contributions to physical optics, theoretical or experimental. It honors Max Born, who made distinguished contributions to physics in general and optics in particular. The award is endowed by the United Technologies Research Center, Physical Optics Corporation, and individuals including Joseph Goodman.
