See the Light on 16 May 2020.
OSA, IEEE Photonics Society, SPIE and the Steering Committee encourage our community to celebrate the International Day of Light on 16 May 2020 with #SEETHELIGHT. Let's communicate the importance of the science of light and light-based technologies. You can view a special video message beginning 13 May at lightday.org/seethelight.
For the International Day of Light 2020, we can anticipate that any in-person events that were planned will not be able to take place due to global containment measures for COVID-19. You can read the official statement from the Chair of International Day of Light Steering.
- Postpone or provide virtual options.
As social and event gatherings are highly discouraged, plan to offer online engagement or defer plans until later. The new date does not have to coincide with 2021; the time selected should be when the host feels confident that they will have the anticipated impact on communicating the optics and photonics. If you plan to host a virtual event, we hope you will let us know at firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Share digital content about the importance of light science and technology.
The celebration of the day of light can exist through social media where all are encouraged to share stories, history and research about the importance of the science of light in diagnosing and treating disease as well its general importance in our lives. Connect to the celebration using #idl2020 and #seethelight with an "@" to OSA's handles on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
Light science and technology play a critical role in our global response to the the COVID-19 pandemic.
