In support of Iranian women, Iranian youth, and all Iranians in their fight for freedom and justice

Optica Fellow, Professor Ebrahim Karimi and collaborators.

Optica Fellow, Professor Ebrahim Karimi and collaborators share support of Women.Life.Freedom in a guest blog.

We, the undersigned, in the academic communities all over the world strongly condemn the brutal murder of a Kurdish-Iranian woman, Mahsa (Zhina) Amini, and other protestors in Iran. We hereby speak out forcefully against the vicious attacks on students and faculty that took place on Sunday, 2 October 2022 at the Sharif University of Technology, Iran’s premier institution of higher education -such demonstrations and clashes have also occurred at Iran’s other universities.

We show our support for the valiant Iranian protestors who have stood up against the unjust killing of Mahsa Amini and countless other demonstrators, and who are fighting the repressive forces in the Islamic Republic, including its notorious security apparatuses, which have harassed, abused, and killed Iranians for decades. In recent days, Iranian demonstrators, many of them women and the youth, have faced tremendous dangers as they have taken to the streets to have their voices heard and to fight for their rights. This movement has expanded to include a demand for enfranchisement of Iran’s marginalized groups.

Time is of the essence, and we in the free world should be the voice of Iranian people in their fight for freedom, justice and rights, including gender rights.  We recall the wise words of Benjamin Franklin, who said, “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” The world should not waste the opportunity to support an unprecedented political movement instigated by women and led by women to bring an end to repression and to fight for women’s rights and for political freedom everywhere. The mantra, “Women. Life. Freedom,” has been chanted in demonstrations throughout the world and has been translated into multiple languages.

We stand in solidarity with the people of Iran in the country’s historic fight for freedom, justice, and a democratic government.

                                                                        Respectfully,
