Photons: From the Fundamentals to Their Use for Quantum Communications

Hosted By: Optical Communications Technical Group

16 May 2023 11:30 - 12:30

Eastern Time (US & Canada) (UTC -05:00)

In this webinar, Stefania Sciara will provide insights on photons, from their fundamentals to their use for quantum communications. Dr. Sciara will introduce some basic properties of photons, such as their quantum degrees of freedom and entanglement, and explain why these are crucial for fundamental quantum science and applications.

Dr. Sciara will introduce quantum communications by focusing on quantum state teleportation and quantum key distribution and will explain the extent to which entangled photons are necessary to either realize or improve these technologies. Dr. Sciara will then introduce some frameworks to implement these applications, including free space-(satellite), fiber-(telecom) based transmission, and integrated optics. This will allow attendees to understand the versatility of photons not only to currently available technologies but also to those of the future.

Dr. Sciara’s webinar will provide attendees with an important message that cannot be found in journal articles or textbooks. Technologies based on photons, especially quantum communications, are not restricted and reserved to a niche, but can be extended to a broad audience and be part of our lives. This can solely be achieved by creating collaborations between researchers and industry. In this regard, both expert and non-expert audiences should register for this webinar to drive their interest toward combining complementary knowledge and contributing to technology advancement on a large scale.

Subject Matter Level: Introductory - Assumes little previous knowledge of the topic

What You Will Learn:
• Fundamentals of photons (e.g., degrees of freedom, entanglement)
• Quantum communications
• The importance of researcher-industry networking

Who Should Attend:
• Ph.D. students and researchers interested in networking

About the Presenter: Stefania Sciara from the Institut National De La Recherche Scientifique

Stefania Sciara received her Bachelor Degree in Physical Sciences in 2014 and her Master Degree in Theoretical Physics in 2015 at University of Palermo (Italy). She received her PhD in Energy and Material Science in 2020 at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS, Canada), where she is currently a postdoctoral researcher. Since starting her PhD, Stefania has been focusing her research on quantum optics and photonics, especially in the investigation of entangled photon states and their use for quantum technologies, mainly targeting quantum communication protocols, such as quantum cryptography and teleportation. Stefania was awarded several prizes for her PhD career, including the Best Doctoral Dissertation and the International Outreach Awards, the INRS Executive Chief Office’s Award, and the Governor General’s Gold Academic Medal. Stefania currently holds a Mitacs Elevate fellowship on Quantum Science, comprising an internship with the company Ki3 Photonics.
